Long before the beaches became a popular attraction, people used to visit the Island of Tranquillity, as Rubén Darío called it, for the numerous monuments, important buildings, museums, art galleries and literary interests of Mallorca. But not only were they drawn to the monuments and sights of Palma (such as the Cathedral, the Castle of Bellver, the Palacio Real, the Lonja, the Gran Hotel, the Museo de Mallorca, the twenty modern art galleries and the patrician houses like Can Vivot, Can Oleza, Casal Solleric), but they also see the stark beauty of the monasteries, defence towers, churches, town halls and museums of the other 52 cities. All of these constitute the wealth of the architectural and artistic patrimony of Mallorca. Additionally in Mallorca, you can enjoy the annual Opera Season, members only concerts of the Ciutat de Palma Symphony Orchestra or the program Un invierno en Mallorca which all form part of the rich cultural life in the winter months. In the summer there are open air classical music festivals or modern music concerts, jazz, ballet and theatre performances. Several public organisations contribute to the promotion of the arts and the island's delight. The foundations Pilar and Joan Miró, la Caixa, Sa Nostra and March all join efforts to increase the range of exhibitions which regularly grace public exhibition centres such as Sa Llotja, Casal Solleric, Ses Voltes, Bellas Artes, or Casa de Cultura. Literary and educational forums, organised by the University of the Balearic Islands with the collaboration of private institutions, are held in the comfort of their conference facilities equipped with the latest technology in and outside the capital.
